Travel

Fly

Fly directly into South Bend (SBN) for quick campus access. Alternatively, consider O’Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW) for more flight options. You can catch a connecting flight to SBN or drive/bus/train roughly 2 hours to campus.

Find Flights

Drive

Driving is the easiest way from Chicago airports to Notre Dame, taking about 2 hours by car. You can opt for the loop around the city from ORD or MDW (via I-294 to I-94), or brave the traffic and cut straight through on I-90.

Find Directions

Bus/Train

Skip the car rental and hop on the Notre Dame Express Shuttle from ORD. For a classic (but long) journey, go old school with the South Shore Train.

FAQ

What is the time zone in South Bend?
Please note that there is a time change between Chicago and South Bend. South Bend Airport and Notre Dame are on Eastern time. Chicago airports (ORD and MDW) are on Central Time. Please take note of this to avoid missed flights!

Where should I stay?
We have reserved a room block at the Embassy Suites Hotel which is one block off of campus. We encourage this hotel or others on or closeby campus (Morris Inn or Fairfield Inn and Suites) for ease of our guests and walkability to all events. We also have a room block at the Doubletree in downtown South Bend, which is a 10 minute drive from campus. Other recommended options include the Inn at Saint Marys or Ivy Court Inn and Suites which are nearby Notre Dame’s campus.

Do I need to rent a car?
If you are flying directly into South Bend and staying on or near campus there is little utility for a car as the campus is designed to be walkable and all events are on or near campus. If you are flying into Chicago, renting a car is the easiest way to get to campus.

Is there parking available on campus?
Notre Dame is a walking campus with little to no vehicle traffic, however there are parking lots on campus. Walking to and from wedding events is highly recommended due to ease and walkability of campus.

Free parking is available in the Visitors Lot by the Hammes Bookstore.

Parking for the mass is available in the Basilica/Grotto (A9) or St. Liam’s Lot. This requires entry through the Main Guard Gate off of Notre Dame Ave.

Parking for the champagne brunch or evening reception is available in the parking lots (B1, C1, Visitor Lot) on the South side of the stadium.

What will the weather be like in South Bend?
Bank on fall colors in full form, but the weather (just like our football team) can be a toss up! Last year was 80, but the average high is 59 and low of 33. Let’s pray for the best, but pack accordingly!

Why is campus so quiet?
It is the end of Fall Break! Academic year breaks are our favorite time to be on campus—many of you have visited during a busy football weekend, but when it is empty, this campus is especially peaceful and wonderful. Students will be trickling back in on Saturday and Sunday to start classes on Monday. This changes the hours of some restaurants on campus which can be found here https://dining.nd.edu/assets/591065/fall_break_24_hrs_final.pdf

What is involved in the Wedding Mass?
Our wedding ceremony will be a Catholic mass where both the Sacrament of Marriage and the Eucharist are celebrated. Mass will last one hour and begin promptly at 9am. Guests are kindly asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of mass to be seated. Guests of all faith traditions and beliefs are warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate in whatever ways they feel comfortable. A guide for the mass will be printed in the program for all to follow along.

What do I do at Communion?
The Catholic Church kindly requests that only guests who are members of the Catholic or Orthodox Church participate in consuming the the Bread or Wine. However, all are encouraged to come forward to receive a blessing. The bride and groom will be distributing both the Eucharist and blessings and we would love the opportunity to share this special moment with you all. Simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate if you will not be receiving the Eucharist.

What should I wear to the wedding mass?
Attire for mass is Coat and Tie. There is no specified dress code for the Basilica.

What should I wear to the Saturday evening reception?
Black tie attire is encouraged!

What do I do during the break?!
Our wedding day is a long one! Please feel free to come and go from events as best suits you! Following the champagne brunch, tours of the Notre Dame Stadium and Campus tours have been coordinated for interested guests. There are two golf courses on campus if you want to get a round in. Finally, Notre Dame is playing Navy away. Go cheer on the Irish in one of our recommended pubs, or relax in one of the hotels near campus.
